How do I customize the network address of my file-sharing links?

How do I customize the network address of my file-sharing links?

Purpose

This article covers the file-sharing mechanism in File Station and guides you through customizing the network address of your file-sharing links.

Resolution

Components of a file-sharing link

You can create file-sharing links to share the files and folders on your Synology NAS. A file-sharing link might look something like the following and is comprised of three components:

https://192.168.1.100:5001/sharing/ILn8QMDl

  1. A valid network address that provides access to your Synology NAS, such as "https://192.168.1.100:5001".
  2. A fixed URL for sharing files, such as "/sharing".
  3. A file path that File Station randomly generates for public sharing (this is not the actual file path), such as "/ILn8QMDl".

Generating a file-sharing link

The network address component of your file-sharing link changes according to how your Synology NAS is configured to connect to the Internet. The following is File Station's order of priority when generating the network address component:

  1. gofile.me
    • For DSM 7.0:
Both the Enable QuickConnect option (Control Panel > External Access > QuickConnect) and the File sharing option (Control Panel > External Access > QuickConnect > Advanced Settings) need to be enabled.
    • For DSM 6.2:
Both the Enable QuickConnect option (Control Panel > QuickConnect > General) and the File sharing option (Control Panel > QuickConnect > Advanced) need to be enabled.
  2. Customized hostname or static IP (Control Panel > External Access > Advanced)1
  3. DDNS (Control Panel > External Access > DDNS)1
  4. QuickConnect URL
    • Only the Enable QuickConnect option needs to be enabled. The File sharing option remains disabled.
  5. The current URL that you use to connect to DSM1

Customizing a file-sharing link

If you want to use your domain name or static IP address as the network address of your file-sharing links, please do the following:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Do the following according to your DSM version:
    • For DSM 7.0:
Go to External Access > QuickConnect > Advanced Settings. Then, untick File sharing and click OK.
    • For DSM 6.2:
Go to QuickConnect > Advanced. Then, untick File sharing and click Apply.
  3. Go to External Access > Advanced.
  4. Enter your domain name or static IP address into the Hostname or static IP field.
  5. Enter your HTTP or HTTPS port number into the DSM (HTTP) or DSM (HTTPS) field if you have it customized. Otherwise, leave these fields blank.
  6. Click Apply.

Notes:

  1. Make sure to enter the customized port number in the DSM (HTTP) or DSM (HTTPS) field (Control Panel > External Access > Advanced) if you changed your DSM's default port number.
