Synology Empowers Leica Geosystems with Reliable and Scalable Backup Solutions

One of the most important reasons that we choose to implement a disk-based backup solution with RS2212RP+ is that it offers automated backup solutions without manual intervention required. Versatile redundancy mechanism is also available to greatly raise reliability.

Adalbert Krobath, System Engineer Application & Data Center Technology, Leica Geosystems

The need for a cost-effective and reliable alternative to archaic tape backups

Many branch offices of Leica Geosystems have local IT infrastructures where data is generated and maintained. Although the company used tape backups to manage data integrity, defective tapes and the effort required for manual tape changes caused problems in the past. Consequently, Leica Geosystems sought a local disk-based backup solution that offered easy implementation, reliability, and scalable capacity on demand. Additionally, the budget was a significant consideration since the costs are borne by the branch offices.

Deploying the RS2212RP+ for efficient centralized management and monitoring

After market research and testing, Leica Geosystems chose Synology's RackStation RS2212RP+ and deployed it at seven branch offices and headquarters. These NAS servers have been integrated into the existing centrally managed Windows Active Directory environment, with network access regulated via group policies. All servers are monitored, and notifications are sent to the central monitoring department in case of component failure. This centralized management for monitoring and privilege settings ensures maximum administrative efficiency.

Additionally, the RS2212RP+ is not limited to disk-based backup tasks. The NAS server offers various practical applications for business use, such as serving as a centralized file server with considerable storage capacity and the capability to mount large image files.

Ensuring business continuity and reliable backups

For any business or organization, ensuring business continuity is a top priority. For Leica Geosystems, the RS2212RP+ meets this requirement with its redundancy mechanisms. With the implementation of this NAS solution, the troublesome tape drives and the need to replace tapes are no longer concerns. Backup tasks run smoothly without any interruptions or operational issues.

To ensure maximum reliability, the server features an additional power supply and dual LAN ports running in fault-tolerance mode. The chosen RAID 6 array protects against the failure of up to two hard disks. If the storage capacity becomes insufficient in the future, the RS2212RP+ can be easily scaled up with expansion units during operation without the need for further configuration adjustments.
