We recently purchased a Synology Rackstation RS3614xs+ with x12 4TB WD Enterprise SATAs in RAID6. Primarily to act as a simple storage area to dump file based server backups & large VHD files on a daily basis for ease of recovery instead of drugging through tapes. Barely a month later after a rapid implementation the results are in and we are already seeing dramatic improvements in data transfer speeds & reduced backup windows- Yay! One of biggest pluses is the seamless integration with Windows Active Directory even though DSM runs on Linux. Simply by joining the device to your windows domain you have full access to apply NTFS permissions to shared folders – either through the inbuilt Web console (aka FileStation) or from the more familiar Windows Explorer – integration with Windows is trouble free even if you’re running a Windows2003 AD ! But it doesn’t stop there oh no this device does so much more than you can imagine, in fact so much I couldn’t possibly do it justice in a few short words. Safe to say this Pandora’s box of tricks could and should be considered as one stop shop for a small business needing file, print, email, web, backup, firewall/vpn, routing services and with the option of pairing two of these devices in a high availability failover configuration. A personal favourite feature of mine as a user of Joomla, Wordpress and Drupal was seeing the big three open source CMS systems being included as configurable packages. I managed to get all three running on the box in fewer than 30 mins just for fun! In summary I’d just like to say the Synology was the perfect choice for our SMB company offering superb value for money given its rich feature set that would easily push it into 5 figure territory compared to other major named brands. I genuinely couldn't be happier with this product, it has exceeded expectations which doesn’t often happen – it’s like striking Gold, keep up the good work!
