Restoration

Go to Hyper Backup and click Restore in the upper left corner to recover your data/LUNs or the entire system.

Restore data/LUNs

  1. Click Restore and select Data or LUN.
    • To restore data from a local repository, select a restoration task.
    • To restore data from an external repository, click Restore from existing repositories and select a backup destination.
    • To restore LUNs, click Start to launch the LUN Restoration Wizard.
  2. You will be prompted to select system configuration, different versions of backup data, or more. It depends on which type of backup task you want to restore.
  3. If the backup task is encrypted, you need the password/encryption key for a successful restoration.
  4. Follow the wizard to complete the restoration.

Note:

  • After the restoration is complete, both block-level and file-level LUNs will be restored into file-level LUNs.
  • When restoring a package, if the package is not installed, the system will install the backed up version or the latest version. If the package at an older version is installed, the system will update it to the backed up version.
  • If files are modified during data backup, such files will be skipped during restoration and can only be retrieved via the steps in this section.
  • When using Hyper Backup on DSM 6.1 or above, you can partially restore files from the backup versions that had been previously damaged, in which the damaged files will be skipped during file restoration.

Restore specific files or folders

  1. Select a backup task on the left panel and click Backup Explorer . The password/encryption key is needed if the backup task is encrypted.
  2. Drag the timeline bar or click the calendar icon to find a desired backup version.
  3. Select one or more desired files or folders. Press ctrl and click on files to select multiple files or folders. Press shift and click on files to select a range of files or folders. Press ctrl + A to select all.
  4. Click Restore or Copy to... to retrieve selected files/folders. You may also click Download to retrieve one single file.

Note:

  • When retrieving files or folders using Copy to... or Download, their original privilege settings will not be preserved.
  • When retrieving data from the backup of the entire system, you can only click Download to retrieve one file at a time. Shared folders and multiple files cannot be restored or copied.

To filter backup files/folders for restoration:

You can use keywords to quickly find out desired files/folders on the current view. The unmatched files/folders will be hidden.

  1. Type a keyword in the search bar.
  2. If you need to further filter files/folders, click the filter icon to open the drop-down menu, and then configure the settings below:
    • Keyword: You may use the wildcard character * to represent zero or more characters for advanced filtering. For example, [a*n] can represent [action], [attention], or [an]. You may also use multiple * to match any combination of characters, such as [*ex*]. This keyword can match filenames like [123example.jpg], [456expert.txt], or [789execute.doc].
    • File Type: Choose from Any, Any Folder,or Any File to refine your search.
    • Size (KB): Choose from Any, equals, is greater than, or is less than and then enter a value.
    • Modified Date: Choose from Today, Yesterday, Last week, or Last month or Customize to enter a start and end date to find versions within a specific range.
  3. To apply your filters, click Search.
  4. To apply the same filters to another backup version, just use the timeline bar to switch to a desired version.
  5. To reset your filtered search, click Reset.

Note:

  • Backup Explorer is available only to multi-version backup tasks.
  • Backup Explorer has limited functions when the backup destination is set in DSM 5.1 or below.
  • System configuration and applications can only be restored via Restore.
  • The filter function is available only to unencrypted backup tasks.

To browse backup repository via a standard file protocol:

  1. When using Hyper Backup on DSM 6.1 or above, your backup data will be stored in a new file format called .hbk.
  2. You can double-click the .hbk file in File Station to open it directly via Hyper Backup Explorer.
  3. To browse your backup data in File Station or via a standard file protocol (e.g., SAMBA or AFP), right-click the .hbk or .bkpi file, select Mount Hyper Backup destination, and choose a shared folder as the mounted destination.
  4. If you have created an encrypted backup task, you must then enter the password or upload the password file to successfully mount the task.
  5. To disable this function, please right-click the .hbk or .bkpi file and select Unmount.

Note:

  • Restoring the settings of Users and Groups may change the file privilege in shared folders.
  • When you perform backup and restoration on different Synology NAS devices and when no common directory service is available to manage the accounts of different Synology NAS devices, you should restore your data according to the system configurations to ensure the accuracy of file privilege. You can retrieve a file that is less sensitive to file privilege from Hyper Backup Explorer by right-clicking the file and selecting Copy to....
  • The .hbk files which were downloaded from public cloud services and imported to your local folder & USB can be restored by clicking Restore from existing repositories > Local folder & USB. If the .hbk files were downloaded from the local folder & USB and imported to public cloud services, you can restore the files by clicking Restore from existing repositories and selecting the cloud service where the files stored.

Restore the entire system

For Synology NAS devices that have completed the first-time setup:

  1. Click Restore and select Entire System. You will be redirected to Control Panel.
  2. Click Restore System and select the restoration source where your backup data are stored.
  3. Follow the wizard to complete the restoration.

For Synology NAS devices that have not completed the first-time setup:

  1. Click Restore the System on the welcome page.
  2. Select the restoration source where your backup data are stored.
  3. Follow the wizard to complete the restoration.

Note:

  • Drives on the restoration destination must have more storage capacity than the backup drives.
  • Upon restoration, all data on the restoration destination will be overwritten and cannot be recovered.
