Back up and Restore
Back up Synology MailPlus Server to another Synology NAS to minimize the risk of data loss. In the event of sudden disaster, you can restore MailPlus on the Synology NAS that stores backup data.
In this article, the source Synology NAS refers to the one that runs MailPlus Server before failover, while the destination refers to the one that stores MailPlus backups.
Backup
MailPlus Server backups include the following:
- Mail system configurations
- Mailboxes and emails
- DSM accounts
Back up mail system configurations
With Hyper Backup, you can create a remote copy of mail system configurations.
- Launch Hyper Backup on the source Synology NAS.
- Click + in the upper-left corner.
- Select Remote NAS device as the backup destination. The destination Synology NAS must be compatible with MailPlus and have Hyper Backup Vault installed.
- Specify the settings. When prompted to select an application to back up, choose Synology MailPlus Server.
- The task will back up your configurations on the following pages:
- Domain
- Mail Delivery
- Service
- Security
- Auditing
- Account
Back up mailboxes and emails
The one-way sync solution, Shared Folder Sync, can back up a large number of mailboxes and emails in a timely manner.
- Go to Control Panel > File Services > Advanced > Shared Folder Sync on the source Synology NAS.
- Create a sync task for the MailPlus shared folder.
- With the sync task running, mailboxes and emails will be up-to-date on the destination Synology NAS.
Note:
- Do not use Cloud Station Server, Cloud Sync, or Synology Drive to back up MailPlus data. Their sync features may corrupt data due to compatibility issues.
Back up DSM accounts
If your MailPlus user type is set to local users, set up DSM configuration backups to save a copy of DSM accounts.
- Go to Control Panel > Update & Restore > Configuration Backup.
- Select Enable automatic DSM configuration backup.
- Choose an encryption mode for the backup data.
- Click Apply to save the settings. DSM configurations will then be backed up and uploaded to your Synology Account.
Restore
When a disaster occurs, you can resume MailPlus using the backup data.
Before you start
Do the following on the source Synology NAS:
- Go to Package Center to stop Synology MailPlus Server and Synology MailPlus.
- Go to Control Panel > File Services > Advanced > Shared Folder Sync. Delete the sync task for the MailPlus folder to avoid data overwrite.
Connect to account system
Connect the destination Synology NAS to the source account system to map users to their mailboxes.
- If your MailPlus user type is set to local users, restore DSM configurations.
- If your MailPlus user type is set to domain or LDAP users, connect the destination Synology NAS to the source directory server.
Restore MailPlus data
- Launch Hyper Backup on the destination Synology NAS.
- Restore the backed-up configurations.
- The mailboxes and emails that were backed up through Share Folder Sync do not require additional restoration. They can be used immediately.
Note:
- If there is already a MailPlus shared folder on the destination Synology NAS, the backed-up folder will be automatically renamed to MailPlus_1. To use data in MailPlus_1, manually move them to the MailPlus shared folder.
Migrate MailPlus licenses
To transfer email services to the destination Synology NAS, you need to migrate MailPlus licenses for account activation.
- License keys are associated with your Synology Account. Sign in to your Synology Account on the destination Synology NAS first.
- Launch Synology MailPlus Server.
- Go to License > MailPlus to enter the license keys.
- Once migrated, the licenses on the source Synology NAS will become invalid.
