Generate sharing links

Since users can connect to the Synology Drive server via various methods, the type of domain used for generating the sharing link may vary depending on the settings and access method. How the sharing links are generated is explained in detail below.

By domain type

Sharing links are generated in the below order of priority. This means that when any of the following scenarios is met or access method is configured, the link will be generated using the highest priority connection type on Synology Drive web portal, Synology Drive mobile app, and Synology Drive Client.

  1. Customized sharing link domain in Synology Drive Admin Console
  2. Customized Synology Drive domain name
    • For DSM 7.0 and above: Go to Control Panel > Login Portal > Applications, select Synology Drive, and click Edit.
    • For DSM 6.2 and earlier: Go to Control Panel > Application Portal, select Synology Drive, and click Edit.
  3. The hostname of static IP in Control Panel > External Access> Advanced
  4. DSM customized domain
    • For DSM 7.0 and above: Go to Control Panel > Login Portal > DSM > Domain.
    • For DSM 6.2 and earlier: Go to Control Panel > Network > DSM Settings > Domain.
  5. DDNS access
    • Synology DDNS will be chosen as the first priority. Otherwise, the last DDNS will be used.
  6. QuickConnect
  7. If the above are not configured, the link will be generated with whichever connection method the user accesses the service with.

By customized ports

If users are accessing through external IP, DDNS, or if no configuration has been set, the following port and alias settings will be applied in the below order of priority:

  1. Synology Drive application customized alias
  2. Synology Drive application customized ports for HTTP/HTTPS
  3. External IP customized port for HTTP/HTTPS
  4. DSM customized ports for HTTP/HTTPS

For other link generation rules or when port customization has not been set, HTTP and HTTPS will use the default 80 and 443 ports respectively.

Customize sharing link domain

Starting from Synology Drive 2.0, system admins can customize the domain for Synology Drive sharing links. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Go to DSM and launch Synology Drive Admin Console.
    • For Synology Drive 3.0: Go to Settings > Sharing > Customize Sharing Link.
    • For Synology Drive 2.0: Go to Settings > Others > Customize Sharing Link.
  2. Select Force the use of HTTPS on generated sharing links3 4 to ensure that the sharing links will be secure.
  3. Select Enable sharing link customization to set up customized domain rule for sharing links generated on all client devices.
  4. From the drop-down menu, select a domain type or Customized to set up your own domain for the sharing links.5 6
    • To set a custom domain as your sharing link domain, the domain should include the protocol, URL, and port number, such as: https://mydrive.synology.me:5001. If you want to use a non-default DSM port number, go to Control Panel > Login Portal to ensure that the desired port number has been assigned to Synology Drive.
    • To use the default HTTP and HTTPS ports (80 and 443) for the sharing link, go to the Control Panel > Login Portal to configure a custom domain for Synology Drive and assign that custom domain as the sharing link domain.

Notes:

  1. When any of the connection methods is set up, users may access Synology Drive server via any of the viable domain or connection type.
  2. To ensure synced client access after setting up QuickConnect:
    • For DSM 7.0 and above: Go to Control Panel > External Access > QuickConnect, click Advanced Settings > Permission, and tick to enable Synology Drive Server.
    • For DSM 6.2 and earlier: Go to Control Panel > QuickConnect > Advanced > Permission, and tick to enable Synology Drive Server.
  3. When this option is ticked, make sure the port is enabled for HTTPS connections.
  4. When this option is ticked, QuickConnect sharing links may be generated in HTTP format due to certificate issues.
  5. If the selected customized domain is not valid, the system automatically opts for an available connection type according to the priority mentioned in the Generate sharing links section.
  6. The settings will only affect newly-created sharing links. Sharing links with other valid connection types will continue to work and be accessible for the shared files.
