How to install DSM?
Purpose
This article guides you through the process of installing DSM on your Synology NAS via a web browser or Synology Assistant.
Environment
- Your Synology NAS has been set up and at least one 3.5" or 2.5" compatible drive is installed.1 2 Please refer to your device's Hardware Installation Guide, which is available in Synology Download Center.
- Your Synology NAS is powered on.
- Your computer and Synology NAS are connected to the same local network and have access to the Internet.
Resolution
Option 1: Install using a web browser
- Open a web browser on a computer and go to find.synology.com or synologynas:5000 (synologynas.local:5000 for Mac computers).3 4
- Web Assistant will launch in your web browser. It will search for and find Synology devices on your local network. The status of your device should be Not installed.5
- Click Connect to start the DSM installation and setup process. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Option 2: Install with our desktop utility, Synology Assistant

Notes:
- Refer to Synology Products Compatibility List for a list of compatible drives.
- If M.2 SSD slots are available on your Synology NAS, the installed M.2 SSD modules can only serve as SSD caches or for creating volumes on certain models. They cannot be used for DSM installation.
- Suggested browsers: Chrome, Firefox.
- When you visit find.synology.com, Synology collects device information such as IP address. Refer to the Data Collection Disclosure for details.
- Some of the information may be unavailable due to restrictions imposed by the web browser you are using.
