How can I convert physical operating systems to virtual machines in Virtual Machine Manager?
Purpose
Virtual Machine Manager integrates multiple virtualization solutions and provides a centralized and sleek user interface. The package helps you easily create virtual machines or convert physical operating systems to virtual machines. Virtual Machine Manager can also turn backups from Active Backup for Business into virtual machines so you can look for files or other data from earlier backups.

Convert physical operating systems to images and import them to Virtual Machine Manager
Virtual Machine Manager supports the following file formats for imports:
- OVA (Open Virtual Appliance)
- VMDK (VMware Virtual Machine Disk)
- VHD/VHDX (Fixed and Dynamic Virtual Hard Disk)
- VDI (Virtual Disk Image)
- IMG (raw images)
- ISO (disk images)
To import VMDK, VHD/VHDX, VDI, or IMG images:
- Go to Virtual Machine Manager > Image > Disk Image and add the images.1
- On the Virtual Machine page, click Create > Import.
- Choose Import from disk images and follow the instructions to finish the import.
Notes:
- You can convert physical operating systems to VHD images with Disk2vhd from Microsoft or VMware vCenter Converter from VMware.
To import ISO files:
- Go to Virtual Machine Manager > Image > ISO File and add the images.
- On the Virtual Machine page, click Create > Import.
- Choose Import from disk images and follow the instructions to finish the import.
To import OVA files:
- Go to Virtual Machine Manager > Virtual Machine and click Create > Import.
- Choose Import from OVA files and follow the instructions to finish the import.
