How do I play my Synology NAS music on iTunes or Apple Music?
Purpose
This article shows how to stream music and videos from Synology iTunes Server to iTunes or Apple Music clients on Windows or Mac, and explains how to set your smart playlists.
Notes:
- The iTunes Server package is supported only up until DSM 7.1.x. If your Synology NAS is updated to DSM 7.2 or any future versions, the package will no longer be available. Refer to the package's end-of-life announcement.

Set up iTunes Server
After installing iTunes Server, you can store your music collection in the music shared folder and stream music stored on your Synology NAS to iTunes or Apple Music on your computer. Please follow the steps below to set up your iTunes Server:
- Sign in to your Synology NAS as a user belonging to the administrators group, and go to iTunes Server.
- Enter your Shared name.
- Tick Require password (optional) and enter a password if you want iTunes users to enter a password before accessing your shared folders.1
- Click Apply.
Play music and videos on iTunes/Apple Music clients
Follow the steps below to access music and videos on iTunes/Apple Music clients:2
- Launch Apple Music or iTunes on your computer. Go to Library > Music (for iTunes) or Library (for Apple Music) to open the drop-down menu. Browse through the listed iTunes servers to find the server with the shared name you set.
- If you set a password, enter the password and click OK.
- You can access all the music and videos stored on your Synology NAS.
Use Smart Playlist
Songs that match specific criteria can be grouped into a smart playlist. Refer to the following steps to create a smart playlist on a Windows or Mac iTunes/Apple Music client.
Create a smart playlist:
- Go to iTunes Server.
- Click Smart Playlist to create a smart playlist.
- Click Create.
- In the pop-up window, type a name and set rules for the playlist.
- Click OK.
Edit a smart playlist:
- Select the item you want to edit and click Edit or double-click the item.

Do any of the following to modify the rules:
- Click + to add a rule.
- Modify the rules by choosing items from the drop-down menu.
- Select a rule and click - to delete the rule.
- Click OK to apply the setting.
Delete a smart playlist:
- Select the smart playlist you want to delete.
- Click Delete and then click Yes.
Play smart playlists on an iTunes client:
- Go to Library, and click Music on the upper-left corner to open the drop-down menu.
- Browse through the listed iTunes servers to find the server with the shared name you set.
- Once you access the iTunes server, your smart playlists will appear under Music Playlists on the left sidebar.
Notes:
- The music and video shared folders will be accessed by iTunes clients. Make sure you meet the iTunes Server requirements below:
- Audio: MP3, M4A, M4P, WAV, AIF
- Video: MOV, MP4, M4V
- Playlist: WPL, M3U
- The instructions are based on macOS 10.14. The actual steps may vary according to their user-interface updates.
- iTunes Server does not support accessing files through Home Sharing for devices such as iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV.
