How do I back up specific files or folders from Windows PCs or physical servers using Active Backup for Business?

Purpose

This article shows you how to back up specific files or folders from your Windows PC or physical server via Active Backup for Business if you don't want to back up your entire system or volume.1 2

Environment

Resolution

  1. Go to Active Backup for Business > File Server > Add Server.
  2. Choose your server type and enter the server's information.4
  3. Click Create Task.
  4. Select a backup mode.
  5. Select the data you want to back up.
  6. Enter your task name and local path, and set a schedule for your backup task.
  7. If your remote server is running Windows Server 2012 or above, we recommend selecting Enable Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) to ensure data consistency. This also allows you to back up files that are used by other applications, such as Microsoft Outlook files (*.pst).
  8. Check your task settings and click Done.

  3. If you have concerns about SMB security, you may want to consider system or volume-level backups.
  4. To use SMB to transfer files, make sure that port 139 (netbios-ssn), 445 (microsoft-ds), 137 (Nmbd), or 138 (Nmbd) is enabled on your source server.
