Synology Drive ShareSync
Synology Drive ShareSync is the application to sync data across multiple Synology NAS. It is automatically installed along with the Synology Drive Server package in DSM.
Glossary:
- Local Synology NAS: The Synology NAS on which you are operating Synology Drive ShareSync. Data on this Synology NAS will be synced with other Synology NAS.
- Remote Synology NAS: Other Synology NAS you want to sync with the local Synology NAS.
- Local folders: The shared folders on the local Synology NAS.
- Remote folders: The shared folders on the remote Synology NAS.
Before you start
- Install Synology Drive Server on all Synology NAS that you want to sync.
- In Synology Drive Admin Console > Team Folder on each remote Synology NAS, enable shared folders as Team Folders.
We recommend signing in to both local and remote Synology NAS as an admin. Insufficient permissions will result in one-way synchronization.
Set up Synology Drive ShareSync
To sync files between the remote and local Synology NAS, establish their connection first.
Create a new connection on the local Synology NAS
- Open Synology Drive ShareSync, click Start Now or the + icon to begin.
- Enter the IP address (or QuickConnect ID), username, and password of your remote Synology NAS. For domain users, sign in with your domain name\username. For LDAP users, use "username@Base_DN" to sign in. You can also connect via IPv6 or proxy service.
- On the next page, select the folders you want to sync.
- Review the sync settings. To modify the settings, select the folder and click Edit. For details on modifying these settings, refer to the Sync Folders section.
Note:
- To locate your QuickConnect ID, sign in to the remote Synology NAS as an admin and go to Control Panel > External Access > QuickConnect. Learn more
- If you can't connect to the remote Synology NAS or authorize the connection with your credentials, check your network settings. You can also go to Control Panel on the remote Synology NAS, click Application Privileges > Synology Drive, and ensure the admin has enabled your access.
- Mounted shared folders and folders without write permission cannot be used as sync folders on the local Synology NAS.
- Each local Synology NAS can connect to multiple remote Synology NAS, but the same local and remote Synology NAS can only be paired once. Additionally, a local shared folder cannot serve as the sync folder for multiple remote Synology NAS simultaneously. For example, if folder "abc" on local Synology NAS A is set to sync with remote Synology NAS B, it cannot also sync with any other remote Synology NAS.
- Sync direction depends on the permissions of the account used to set up sync between the two Synology NAS:
- Download-only sync occurs if the account lacks write permission to the remote shared folder.
- Upload-only sync occurs if the account lacks write permission to the local shared folder.
Overview
Manage connections
- Select a connection on the left panel.
- Under the Overview tab, you can pause/resume syncing, edit connection, or click Unlink to disconnect the connection with the remote Synology NAS.
Note:
- After you unlink a connection, data in the local shared folder on the local Synology NAS will remain while the connection configuration will be deleted.
Sync Folders
Sync shared folders
Under the Synced folders tab, select the shared folder you want to sync.If you have mounted a folder on the local Synology NAS, files and folders under the mounted folder will not be synced.
Sync homes folder
The homes folder follows a fixed sync rule for data consistency and cannot be changed.
| Source | Destination | Sync mode |
|---|---|---|
| homes folder on the local Synology NAS | homes folder on the remote Synology NAS | Two-way sync |
| homes folder on the local Synology NAS | non-homes folder on the remote Synology NAS | Upload-only |
| homes folder on the remote Synology NAS | non-homes folder on the local Synology NAS | Download-only |
Note:
- To sync the homes folder, sign in as an admin and make sure the folder uses Windows ACL mode. To adjust settings, go to Control Panel > Shared Folder on both Synology NAS, select the homes folder, and click Action > Convert to Windows ACL.
Modify the sync settings
- Select a shared folder, and click Edit.
- In the Folder tab, you can edit the folder location and select specific sub-folders or files that you want to sync.
- In the File filter tab, you can modify the following settings:
- Filter By File Size: Enter a number between 0~10240000 (MB). 0 means unlimited.
- Filter By File Type: The selected file types will be synced. You can unselect the file types you want to exclude, or enter file names or file extensions in the field below and click Add.
- In the Sync Mode tab, you can modify the following settings:
- File sync mode
- Sync direction: Note that if the account used to sign in to the remote Synology NAS has read-only permission, sync will be download-only, and changes on the local Synology NAS won't sync. Files and folders under a mount point on the local Synology NAS also won't be synced.
- Enable advanced consistency check: This allows Synology Drive ShareSync to ensure synchronization accuracy by comparing criteria like hash, execute bit, and file permissions during merging. Note this function may take extra time and resources.
Note:
- Files scattered in the root layer of a shared folder will always be synced unless they are filtered out by File Filter.
- We do not recommended synchronizing and collaborating on Synology Office files across multiple Synology NAS. Changes made to the same files via different Synology NAS may lead to unexpected synchronization issues.
- Files will not be synced by Synology Drive ShareSync under the following circumstances:
- The folder or file path contains any of the following characters:
\, / - The file type is any of the following:
.tmp, .temp, .swp, .lnk - The file name starts with a tilde (~)
- The file or folder name is or contains any of the following:
- @tmp
- @eadir
- .SynologyWorkingDirectory
- #recycle
- desktop.ini
- .DS_STORE
- Icon\r
- thumbs.db
- $Recycle.Bin
- @sharebin
- System Volume Information
- Program Files
- Program Files (x86)
- ProgramData
- #snapshot
- The file path is longer than 2,048 characters.
- The file name is longer than 255 characters.
- The folder or file path contains any of the following characters:
- If the privilege settings on the remote and local Synology NAS are incompatible—for example, if one Synology NAS uses Windows ACL mode for the syncing shared folder while the other does not—the privilege settings cannot be synced. To adjust settings, go to Control Panel > Shared Folder on both Synology NAS, select the shared folder, and click Action > Convert to Windows ACL.
- If your local and remote Synology NAS are in different domain groups, shared folder privileges cannot be synced, even if this option is enabled.
Delete the database
The Delete Database option is only available when you create a task and then disable it.
- Select a shared folder, and click Delete Database. This action deletes the history and settings of the local shared folder's previous sync tasks. Data in the local shared folder will remain on the local Synology NAS.
Sync Log
Sync log allows you to keep track of your synced files and events. You can click the Sync log icon at the upper-left corner to view the log and filter the events.
Settings
Click the Settings icon at the upper-left corner to modify database location, set up default action for resumed sync tasks, and edit file conflict resolution settings.
Note:
- Since a remote Synology NAS can connect to multiple local Synology NAS, conflicts may occur if the same file is modified simultaneously. To resolve this, you can set a conflict resolution rule.
- Select Rename to keep the discarded version to ensure that in the event of a file conflict, Synology Drive ShareSync will rename the file by the following rule:
[file name]_[local NAS name]_[time stamp]_Conflict.[file extension].
