LUN Backup
Hyper Backup allows you to perform LUN (Logical Unit Number) backup to a local or remote Synology NAS. For more information on creating an iSCSI LUN and its functionality, please refer to this article or the help article of SAN Manager.
Back up an iSCSI LUN
- Click + on the upper left corner and select LUN backup task.
- When you are prompted to choose a destination type, choose either of the following:
- Local LUN Backup: Choose this option to back up the LUN from your Synology NAS to a local shared folder or an external storage that is connected to the USB or expansion port of your Synology NAS.
- Network LUN Backup (Synology server): Choose this option to back up the LUN from your Synology NAS to another Synology NAS.
- When prompted, specify the backup destination and source LUN, and set the backup schedule.
- Follow the wizard to complete the setup.
After the backup task is created, the Synology NAS will perform the backup task according to the schedule and store the backed up LUN at the destination. The backed up LUN is used for backup purpose only. To access the backup LUN, see Restore data/LUNs for more information.
Note:
- Both Regular File and Block-Level LUNs will be backed up as file images at the destination. If restored, all Block-Level LUNs will be changed to File LUNs.
- Each backup task can only include one LUN as the backup source.
- You can only create one backup task for each LUN.
- LUNs can only be backed up to an external disk with ext4 format.
- Before performing Network LUN Backup, please log in to the destination Synology NAS to make sure Enable rsync service is selected at Control Panel > File Services > rsync.
- If your Synology NAS connects to the network through a router, make sure you have specified a port forwarding rule for the iSCSI service (TCP port 3260 and port 873) on the router before performing Network LUN Backup.
- If High Availability is enabled or disabled after you have created a Network LUN Backup task, the serial number of LUN Backup on Synology NAS will be changed; therefore, LUN Backup will be identified as connecting to a wrong destination. Please reset your backup task to prevent backup failure.
- If a source NAS undergoes HDD migration, any existing LUN backup tasks created before DSM 7.2 will stop running. You will need to recreate the backup tasks.
About Full Backup and Incremental Backup:
Synology NAS will perform a full backup of the selected LUN for the first time and then perform incremental backup. However, if the name of the shared folder or directory on the backup destination is changed, Synology NAS will perform a full backup for the task again.
