  • Not all of the features of DSM 3.1 are available to all models due to hardware limitation; please see below for more information. If you would like to experience the full potential of DSM 3.1 or the future coming release of the DSM operating system, please consider upgrading the DiskStation to a newer model.

New Features

  1. Storage Manager

    • New and improved Storage Manager offers the flexibility of creating multiple volumes on single RAID, which can be a pooled space of one or multiple hard drives. Storage Manager allows you to manage your storage in a more flexible and efficient way across all available hard drives.
    • Create and expand the volume size at your wish as your application needs change without disruption.
    • Synology Hybrid RAID now offers two disks fault tolerance to ensure your data is always safe with your DiskStation.
    • iSNS support provides easy management and access for your iSCSI targets.

  2. Shared Folder Sync: Shared Folder Sync allows you easily sync the shared folders from one DiskStation to another. The sync can be triggered by the modification on the files, or you can schedule the sync task according to needs, and retain the mirror shared folders on the destination DiskStation.

  3. File Browser Enhancements:

    • You can now directly play the supported video via File Browser from any web browser as long as Internet connection is available.
    • You can now directly preview the supported photos via File Browser and set it as the desktop wallpaper at the same time.
    • You can now directly open and save the supported documents in Google doc.
    • You can now directly launch the Audio Station to play the music files in “music” share from the mouse right-click menu.
    • Advanced search is now available to offer you numerous options for making your searches more precise and getting more useful results.
    • The option to enable file indexing function is also available to increase the efficiency to return the search results.

  4. Multifunction Printer Support (available for Windows environment): Multifunction printer is now supported to allow the print/fax/scan functions on your multifunction printer to be shared among family members or colleagues over the same network.   5. AirPrint Support: AirPrint is now supported to allow you wirelessly print photos, email, web pages, and documents from your iPad/iPhone to any AirPrint-enabled printer connected to DiskStation. For the complete list of supported printers, please see here.

  6. Backup and Restore Enhancements:

    • Back up the same share to multiple destinations is now supported to allow you to keep multiple copies of the same share at different locations.
    • Windows ACL is now supported to allow you to restore the data alone with its complex privilege settings.
    • The DiskStation at backup destination can now be accessed by authorized users, your branch offices may now back up their files to their corporate center by using the private user account.

  7. Auto DSM Update: Auto DSM update is newly added to automatically check the latest DSM version available for your DiskStation, and allows you always update to the latest operating system upon your approval.

  8. Management Enhancements:

    • Administrator group is now support to allow multiple administrators help you manage the fast growing storage in your network, as well as the ease of managing different MIS accounts.
    • Password strength can now be applied to all user accounts to help protect your data, and personal information to provide a more secure environment.
    • Smart System Migration allows you to easily migrate your old hard drives from one DiskStation to another DiskStation with the same model in case of hardware failure.
    • Network user interface has been enhanced to provide easy management for multi-LAN.

  9. Mail Server: Mail server is now built inside the operating system, DiskStation Manager 3.1, providing POP3/IMAP and SMTP services, you may now manage your emails on your favorite email clients such as Microsoft Outlook or Mac’s Mail.

  10. Mail Station 2 Package:

    • The brand new Mail Station 2 package provides you the web mail service which allows your email communication to be more intuitive, efficient, and useful.
    • Multiple email accounts fetching is now supported to allow you to store all your emails at one central location.
    • Multiple SMTP servers are supported to allow you to choose different email account to be sent from in order to protect your privacy.
    • Personal contacts are now included to provide you with easy contact management.

  11. Download Station 3:

    • The new Download Station is redesigned to provide an easy-to-use and intuitive user interface.
    • BT search is now available with the new Download Station, you may now directly make your searches from your favorite download sources in Download Station and start downloading away.
    • BT files preview is now added to allow you to filter the files you want to download at the BT startup.
    • eMule download service is now available for non-admin users, and allows multi-users to own their personal download tasks.
    • RSS support is newly added to keep track of when your favorite site has been updated with new content and download it automatically.
    • A notification will be sent to DSM desktop when a download task has been completed.
    • A new button is added to allow you to start/resume or stop all your download tasks.

  12. Audio Station 3:

    • The new Audio Station is redesigned to provide an easy-to-use experience.
    • Mini player mode is now available with the new Audio Station, it offers only the core playback functions and nothing else. It allows you to manage your files or download tasks and still able to gain control of your Audio Station at the same time.
    • The equalizer function is available with the USB mode in Audio Station. With just a few simple clicks, you can use the equalizer in Audio Station to customize your listening experience.
    • The personal playlist is now available to your family members and your friends who have access to your Audio Station. They can easily keep their favorite music playlist of their own on your Audio Station without sharing it to anyone else.
    • ID3 tag editor is now added to allow you to modify one or more songs’ information at the same time, such as artist, album name, or title of the song.

  13. Photo Station Enhancements:

    • DiskStation is now open to host multiple Photo Stations. Your family members or closed friends may host their own Photo Station on your DiskStation and share it with their own group of friends.
    • Social network is now featured in Photo Station, you can easily share the link of your photo album onto your Facebook, Twitter, or Plurk.
    • Now you can manage your videos or photos directly in Photo Station. You can move or remove the photos/videos immediately in Photo Station user interface, and able to preview them right away.

  14. Surveillance Station Enhancements:

    • 89 more IP camera models from Panasonic, Arecont, ACTi, Vivotek, Linksys, Zavio, Flexwatch, Messoa and Y-cam are newly supported. For the complete list of supported IP cameras, please see here.
    • Smart Search now features general motion, foreign object, missing object, camera occlusion, and focus lost to make your video searches more precise and getting more useful results. (Available on Internet Explorer only)
    • Image enhancement control is added to the recorded events to adjust various visual elements for more customized viewing experience. (Available on Internet Explorer only)
    • Surveillance Station is now supported in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome to provide more interoperability with popular platforms on the market to meet the needs of diverse users.
    • Import and export IP camera configuration is now supported for easy setup migration, as well as simple maintenance.
    • HTTPS is now supported to provide a more secure way to live view your IP cameras while you are away. (Available on Internet Explorer only)
    • Live view can now be viewed with the original aspect ratio which reduces image distortion and maintains intended quality.
    • Customizable landing page location allows all Surveillance Station spectators and managers to choose the default page when they login.

  15. iPhone App:

    • A new iPhone app, DS file, is now available on Apple® App Store for free download. DS file allows you who own an iPhone/iPod touch to browse the files on your DiskStation via WebDAV, and download/upload files from/to your DiskStation. You can also manage – copy, move, rename or delete - your files while you are away from your office or home as long as the Internet connection is available, off-line browsing for your favorites is also supported in case of the unstable wireless connection.

  16. iPad App:

    • DS photo+ is now enhanced with HTTPS support and the new and improved user interface has utilized the large screen on iPad to provide a more intuitive hands-on experience.
    • DS audio is now enhanced with HTTPS support and the new and improved user interface has utilized the large screen on iPad to provide the 100% iPad user experience. It can now also stream music directly to Apple TV in the same local network.
    • DS cam's user interface has been completely redesigned for iPad. Information display is now more intuitive via menu style controls, for viewing while browsing at the same time. More advanced filtering modes are also available for locating the events more efficiently.

  17. EZ-Internet Router Supporti: More than 40 router models from Netgear, Buffalo, TP-Link, Trendnet, and other brands are now supported. For the complete list of supported routers, please see here.

  18. Samba/CIFS Access Log: The access log for Windows file transfer is now added to allow you to monitor the history of file transferring in Samba/CIFS.

  5. Telnet/SSH services can only be accessed by the “admin” account.

  6. To enhance your video playing experience in File Browser, it is recommended to install VLC player on your computer and the VLC browser plug-in. However, please note File browser will not enable the VLC plug-in in Safari (Mac version) and Chrome (Windows version).
  7. After upgrading to DSM 3.1, it is required to upgrade the Mail Station to Mail Station 2 package.
  8. After upgrading to DSM 3.1, the system will automatically generate one 1280x1280 thumbnail for all photos in “photo” shared folder. This thumbnail is for iPad review usage.
  9. After upgrading to DSM 3.1, the system will automatically rename your user group to “administrators1” if “administrators” is found.
  10. After upgrading to DSM 3.1, all multimedia files in “photo”, “music” and “video” share will be re-indexed.
  11. After upgrading to DSM 3.1, all your active download tasks will be re-verified (hash check).

Limitation & Known Issues

  • The maximum volume size for DS509+, RS409+, and RS409RP+ with expansion units is 16TB due to 32bit operating system.

New Features

  1. Personalized Web Desktop:

    • The new DiskStation Manager Desktop is redesigned to provide an easy-to-use and intuitive user interface. The personal Desktop keeps users' applications and functions easily accessible. Besides, it's customizable so that users can change the wallpaper and background color on their own preference.
    • Login style is introduced to provide users the alternatives with different login screens and the convenience of adding users' own recognition.
    • Main menu is comprised of control panel and all applications, from which users can freely drag the icons to Desktop, or remove it at a later time. The application icons in main menu are available to users at all times.
    • Control panel consolidates all system settings where users can easily modify both software and hardware settings. Home button on the navigation bar provides instant access back to the homepage of control panel.
    • Help browser is added to provide direct access to a comprehensive library of all functions’ introduction and instructions. Home button on the navigation bar provides instant access back to the homepage of Help.
    • Search field on both task bar and navigation bar on Control Panel helps users to look through applications or Help at the same time.
    • Search field is added to task bar on User, Group, and Domain Privileges to assist admin locating the user accounts and group with ease and efficiency.
    • Uploading queue on task bar provides quick information of the latest uploading tasks.
    • File task monitor allows users to check the progress of all uploading and background tasks.
    • System Information and Resource Monitor help users to track the health status of their DiskStations.
    • Storage Manager is added to help users easily organize their hard drives and volumes, as well as iSCSI LUN and target.

  2. Multitasking: Users can run multiple applications simultaneously on Desktop and switch between them instantly. Multitasking support saves users from the constant wait of refreshing the whole webpage. All running applications are placed on the task bar.

  3. File Browser:

    • File Browser provides easy file navigation on Desktop.
    • Drag-and-drop between two different file browsers to copy or move files is now supported and provides easy file management.
    • File uploading in the background is supported therefore allows users to switch to another application without interrupting.
    • File browser now replaces File Station of the default management UI port. File Station on the customized port remains the same.

  4. iSCSI Enhancements:

    • LUN mapping support allows multiple LUNs to be mapped to each iSCSI Target.

    • 254 more IP camera models from Sanyo, Toshiba, Cisco, Axis, Panasonic, AirLive, Messoa, TP-Link, Compro, Etrovision, and other brands are now supported. View the complete list here.
    • ONVIF and PSIA support provides the compatibility between Surveillance Station 5 and ONVIF and PSIA compliant IP cameras.
    • The whole user interface is revamped to provide easy navigation and easy-to-use user experience. Larger viewable area is available in Live View and Timeline.
    • 25 channels & 36 channels layout are now added in Live View to offer users who utilize the centralized management on Surveillance Station with more options.
    • A custom login port is added to provide users with independent access to Surveillance Station without logging into DSM.
    • Non-sync mode in Timeline event player allows users to view events from up to 4 IP cameras simultaneously in a more efficient way.
    • Time slicing is now added to Event Player to split the playing event into four equal-length clips to help users quickly glance through the whole event.
    • Guard wizard is added to guide users through the process of setting up the patrol and Guard tasks with the IP cameras.
    • Event filter is enhanced with new layout to help users locate the events within a timely fashion.

  6. Audio Station Enhancements:

    • Music playback for audio files in AAC, APE, AIFF, FLAC, WMA, and OGG formats is now available in streaming mode with WAV transcoders.

  7. File Station Enhancements:

    • File operations including move, copy, and delete in the background is supported to allow users to continue their work without waiting.
    • Upload files with size over 4GB is now supported with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5 or onward.

  8. Photo Station Enhancement: Google map function is enhanced, allowing browsing multiple locations where all the photos are taken within the same album if the geo-information is available.

  9. iPhone App (Free download on Apple®App Store):

    • DS photo is enhanced and renamed to DS photo+. It allows users to easily browse through photos and videos on Photo Station with the thumbnail slider on the go, including interactive with friends through the photo or video comments in real time. Users can easily find out the location where the photo is taken with the built-in Google map, and they can download and store the pictures onto their iPhone/iPod touch and enjoy the flashbacks anytime anywhere. In addition, users can upload photos and videos from their iPhone/iPod touch straight to Photo Station with DS photo+.
    • DS audio is enhanced with the Remote control feature which provides intuitive interface to browse through Audio Station music tank, it allows users to remote control Audio Station music playing on the attached speakers conveniently. Users can now browse music by folders and genres, then able to play music in the background in iOS 4.
    • DS cam now supports multitasking in Apple iOS 4 and H.264 in event playback.

  10. Android Phone Applications (Free download on Google® Android Market):

    • DS cam allows users who own an Android phone to live view IP cameras managed on Surveillance Station, take snapshots, and view recorded events stored on their Surveillance Station whenever network connection is available.
    • DS photo+ allows users who own an Android phone to easily browse through photos and videos on Photo Station with the thumbnail slider on the go, including interactive with friends through the photo or video comments in real time. Users can easily find out the location where the photo is taken with the built-in Google map, and they can download and store the pictures onto their Android phones and enjoy the flashbacks anytime anywhere. In addition, users can upload photos and videos from their Android phone straight to Photo Station with DS photo+.
    • DS audio allows users who own an Android phone to stream their own music stored on DiskStation on the go. Besides, the Remote control feature provides intuitive interface to browse through Audio Station music tank, it allows users to remote control Audio Station music playing on the attached speakers conveniently.

  11. WebDAV: Web-based Distribution Authoring and Versioning is added to allow users to manage and edit files on DiskStation remotely with the support of content metadata and overwrite protection. It helps a disperse group of users around the world work on the same project as a team, which will greatly increase the effectiveness of group collaboration.

  12. PHP Enhancements:

    • PHP management is now enhanced to allow users easily enable or disable PHP module individually.
    • PHP modules added: eaccelerator, mcrypt, LDAP, and intl.

    • The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) simplifies the RAID setup, allowing the DiskStation to maximize the available storage of varying disk capacities yet with data protection. Experienced administrators may still use a manual option of creating a storage volume.
    • RAID10, 3-way RAID 1 and 4-way RAID 1 volume types are supported.
    • Block-based iSCSI target is supported and providing faster performance of file transfer.
    • The Volume Manager User Interface has been updated with additional graphics and illustrations.

  2. EZ-Internet: The EZ-Internet Wizard is now available for guiding through the steps to establish access to DiskStation from the Internet, including firewall settings, PPPoE setup, DDNS registration, and router port forwarding configuration*. The "Router Configuration" feature is also available on the management UI under "Internet Connection" category, which accomplishes the port forwarding tasks on the router for you.   3. Shared Folder Encryption: AES 256-bit shared folder encryption is supported with the DiskStation. The encrypted shared folder cannot be accessed until it is mounted by entering the encryption key.

  4. Backup Enhancements:

    • In addition to the existing "shared folder" level backup, "sub folder" level backup is now supported.
    • NetBackup shared folder is supported to act as the backup source. This allows backing up the data sets from DiskStation A to DiskStation B, and from DiskStation B to DiskStation C, and so on.

  5. File Station 3:

  7. iPhone Support: A new iPhone app, DS cam, is available on Apple® App Store for free. DS cam allows users who own an iPhone/iPod touch to live view the IP cameras (in MJPEG format), take snapshots, and view recorded events on your Surveillance Station whenever network connection is available.

    1. Alarm Recording Support: Other than Continuous Recording and Motion Detection Recording modes, a new option of Alarm Recording mode is now supported. In Alarm Recording mode, Surveillance Station records videos when receiving external I/O signals from the camera.
    2. MPEG-4 Support: Other than M-JPEG video format, MPEG-4 format streaming and video recording is also supported, which significantly reduces the storage capacity requirement.
    3. Megapixel Support: Depending on the IP cameras capability, megapixel video live-view and recording can be supported.
    4. Snapshot: Snapshot taking in live-view and event play back is available.
    5. Enhanced Management: Admin can go to Privilege page of Surveillance Station and grant other users the privileges of managing Surveillance Station, simply watch the live-view and events, or nothing at all. In addition, admin can now monitor the live-view on full screen, and manage the cameras by enabling/disabling cameras without deleting all the settings. Event recording can be stopped at anytime and played back immediately.
    6. Enhanced Performance: Depending on the IP cameras capability, admin can choose to implement the motion detection by camera rather than Surveillance Station, which further enhances the system performance.
    7. Additional 45 IP Cameras Support: 45 more IP camera models from Panasonic, Vivotek and LevelOne are added into the support list. Synology Surveillance Station now support up to almost 70 IP camera models in total from 7 renowned brands. Read the detailed camera list here.
  8. Enhanced Local Backup: Enables multiple scheduled Local Backup tasks with the assistance of Local Backup wizard, the backup destination can be either the external HDD or the shared folders on the internal HDD. From now on, the external attached HDD (EXT3 or FAT format) can be used as storage and backup disk simultaneously.
  9. Enhanced FTP Server: The advanced privilege of "write-only" is supported. In addition, limiting the maximum connections from each individual IP provides better bandwidth management together with the bandwidth restriction option. UTF-8 filename support which better handles multilingual characters is also optional.
  10. New Download Station 2: Other than BT/FTP/HTTP download, new download channels eMule and NZB are now supported by the Download Station 2. In addition, partial files download from BT is also allowed. Download Station 2 is now separated from the management UI and stands on an individual webpage.
  11. Enhanced File Station: Admin can designate his/her own File Station with a different port as well as customize webpage banner, so that users will login the File Station independent from the NAS server management UI. The advanced privilege of "write-only" is also supported.
  12. Enhanced Audio Station: No USB speakers are required for playing music stored on the server anymore. The new streaming mode streams .mp3 audio files to the client PC(1) and delivers by built-in speakers. A built-in playlist "Random100" will randomly choose and play 100 songs each time it is selected.
  13. Enhanced Photo Station 3: Admin can now customize Photo Station 3 background and theme in his/her own fashion, and sort photos and albums according to personal preference in the Settings area. Language setting is also modifiable based on his/her choice. The media RSS feed is now supported. Moreover, users can now enjoy the Photo Station 3 with Cooliris (formerly known as PicLens) dazzling full screen 3-dimensional photo slideshow(2). FLV video files are now supported.
  14. Enhanced Windows ADS Compatibility: Better handles the Windows domains especially for those with a large number of domain users. Windows Server 2008 is also supported now.
  15. Enhanced Mac OS Usability: Synology NAS servers will be automatically found by Bonjour protocol, including Finder and Safari browser (Bookmarks > Bonjour).
  16. Enhanced iTunes Server: M4A and M4P file formats are correctly indexed on iTunes server with tags information. WAV and AIF files are now supported to be streamed, but metadata may not be indexed.
  17. Enhanced Hibernation: Improved hibernation mechanism is introduced particularly to solve the problem of Western Digital Green Power series HDDs' not sleeping while in hibernation.
  18. Perl Support: Perl 5.8.6 is formally included in Synology DiskStation Manager 2.0.
  19. Package Management & Logitech SqueezeCenter Support: The Logitech SqueezeCenter will be supported on Synology NAS servers after installing the SqueezeCenter package (download here) provided by Synology. Users can easily install and uninstall this package, run and stop the SqueezeCenter service on Synology NAS servers on the [System > Package Management] page.

Special Notes

  1. Along with the Download Station 2 enhancement, the previous Download Redirector versions will no longer work with Synology DiskStation Manager 2.0. To execute the download tasks on desktop, please download and install the latest Download Redirector (v.720) instead.
  2. After firmware upgrade and reboot, the system will re-create all thumbnails (bigger in size than the previous ones) for all photos stored in "photo" shared folder. This process might take some time, depending on the amount of files.
