What can I do if one of my volumes crashed?
What can I do if one of my volumes crashed?
Symptoms
A volume crash caused by drive errors or file system errors cannot be repaired.
Resolution
Please refer to the following four common scenarios and take corresponding actions to solve the issue:
Scenario 1: System cannot be powered on
You cannot power on your Synology NAS because of drive failure issues. Please fix the drive failure and retrieve the data from your drives.
Scenario 2: Data cannot be read
You can power on your Synology NAS and sign in to DSM. However, the data on your Synology NAS cannot be read via File Station because of drive errors. Please contact your local data rescue companies for assistance.
Scenario 3: Data can still be read
You can power on your Synology NAS and sign in to DSM. Moreover, the data on your Synology NAS can still be read via File Station. To ensure data security, please do not power off your system and follow the steps below:
- Back up the data on your Synology NAS to a client computer within the local network (Windows or Mac).
- Go to Storage Manager to remove the storage pool of the crashed volume.
- Run a memory test on your Synology NAS (learn more). If the test result is not Normal or successful, please replace the memory module. If you are using a non-Synology memory module, please replace it with one that is manufactured by Synology.
- Create a new storage pool and volume.
- Restore the backed-up data to the newly created storage pool and volume.
Scenario 4: Drive is accidentally removed
If the volume crash is caused by accidental removal of a drive, please do the following:
- Insert the removed drive back into your Synology NAS immediately.
- Depending on your DSM version, you can:
- DSM 7.0: Go to Storage Manager > Storage to online assemble and convert a storage pool back to available status without restarting your system.
- DSM 6.2: Restart the system.
- If the issue is solved, please perform data scrubbing.
- Back up your data to ensure data security.
Notes:
- If an error occurs while you are copying a file from a crashed volume, it means that the file has become corrupted. Please skip that file and continue copying other files.
