What do I need to do after migrating via Migration Assistant?
What do I need to do after migrating via Migration Assistant?
Purpose
Migrating via Migration Assistant does not transfer your Synology Account and licenses. Some services also require manual configuration after migration. If you use such services on the source NAS, follow the steps in this article to configure the destination device to take over the services from the source NAS.
Environment
After the migration task has succeeded, block the connection to the source NAS until the destination NAS is ready to provide services. Doing so prevents data inconsistency. To stop the services on the source NAS, try either of the following:
- Disable the network interface that provides services to all users. In the meantime, you can enable another network interface for yourself to manage and monitor the source NAS.
- Disable all connection methods (e.g., QuickConnect, IP, Domain name services) for all users.
Resolution

3.1 Repair and update packages
- If the source and destination NAS use different CPU and package architectures, you must go to Package Center on the destination NAS to repair all packages. Learn more about CPU and package architecture of the models in this article.
- When migrating between two Synology NAS with different DSM versions, some packages' versions on the source NAS may not be compatible with the DSM version of the destination NAS, and require an update after the migration task is finished. Go to Package Center on the destination NAS to update packages.
- We recommend updating all packages to the latest version to ensure all services work properly, and have security fixes and new features.
If you have the following packages installed on your source NAS, check the configurations in each package.
- Active Backup for Business: If you have previously used this package to backup a virtual machine, launch Active Backup for Business, go to Virtual Machine > Manage VMware vSphere > Edit, and re-enter VMware vSphere's credentials.
- Central Management System:
- If the source NAS was a CMS host, disable the Central Management System package on the source NAS to ensure there's always one running CMS host only. However, DO NOT uninstall the Central Management System package on the source NAS. Otherwise, all of the managed server will be removed from CMS host.
- If the source NAS was added to a CMS host as a managed server, go to Central Management System > Server on the CMS host, select the source NAS from the server list, and click Remove. Then click Add to add the destination NAS to the server list.5
- MailPlus Server:
- Buy licenses for the destination NAS.
- Since MailPlus Server is tied to network interface, make sure the correct network interface is selected in MailPlus.
- If the MailPlus Server on the source NAS was set up as part of a cluster, you can re-configure it.
- Synology Directory Server:
- Make sure to upgrade the package from Active Directory Server to Synology Directory Server.
- Make sure to change the server name of the destination NAS to that of the source NAS. We recommend changing the server name after you have configured all package settings. For steps on how to do so, refer to Section 4.
- Synology High Availability: Since Synology High Availability settings cannot be migrated, if your destination NAS is SA3200D, go to Synology High Availability > Monitor on the destination NAS to configure the Service and Network Interface settings.
- Virtual Machine Manager:
- Install Virtual Machine Manager in Package Center on the destination NAS first.
- Open Virtual Machine Manager and the setup wizard will be launched automatically.
- Select none of the volumes in Select Volumes, and click Next. Follow the wizard to complete the initial setup.

- Snapshot Manager for Windows (Only compatible with DSM 6.2 and earlier): If you have installed Snapshot Manager for Windows on any computer client, uninstall and re-install the application to solve connection issues.
4. Redirect external connections from the source NAS to the destination
To transfer all services from the source NAS to the destination NAS, you must redirect all external connections that are used for providing services from the source to the destination. The best way to redirect the connection is to change the server name, IP address, QuickConnect, and DDNS on the source to the destination directly. This action ensures all services can work properly on the destination NAS and prevent any abnormalities.
- Server name:
- Go to Control Panel > Network > General on the destination NAS.12
- Enter the same server name used on the source NAS.
- IP address: Change the IP address of the destination NAS to the source's, while selecting the IP address on the source NAS to Get network configuration automatically (DHCP) or changing it to a different one.
- QuickConnect:
- Go to Control Panel > QuickConnect on the destination NAS.
- Tick Enable QuickConnect.
- Use the same Synology Account to sign in to the destination NAS as the one you used on the source NAS.13
- DDNS:
- Go to Control Panel > External Access > DDNS on the destination NAS.
- Select the Hostname and click Edit.
- Tick Enable DDNS support. If your DDNS supplier is Synology, use the same Synology Account to sign in to the destination NAS as the one you used on the source NAS.
5. Shut down the source NAS
After performing the above steps and ensuring that all services run properly on the destination NAS, you can shut down the source NAS and start using your new NAS.
Notes:
- The licenses of exFAT and Premium Service cannot be migrated. Please purchase a new one for the destination NAS.
- Once you activate the key on the destination NAS, it will be automatically deactivated on the source NAS.
- You can transfer McAfee, sMedio, or DiXiM licenses a maximum of 5 times.
- If you have been using QuickConnect services on the source NAS, you can skip this step and sign in to Synology Account later while configuring QuickConnect service.
- If the source NAS itself is the CMS host, and was also added as a managed server, go to Central Management System on the destination NAS, and follow the same steps to remove the source NAS and add itself as a managed server.
- Settings in Virtual Machine Manager were not migrated. Therefore, re-configure settings on the destination NAS.
- If the source NAS was included in a cluster, follow these steps to add the destination NAS to the cluster.
- Since the MAC address of the service which is migrated to the destination NAS is the same as the source NAS, you are unable to run the same service on both devices at the same time.
- The plan that is replicated to the source NAS will be disabled right after the migration task has succeeded. Further, if you enable the replication plan on the destination NAS, the same plan cannot be re-enabled on the source NAS.
- To ensure correct access privileges, access the directory with domain / LDAP accounts.
- If you want to use different Hybrid Share folders for the source and the destination NAS, sign in to the destination NAS with a different Synology Account and mount a separate Hybrid Share folder.
- If you use Synology Directory Server, make sure to change the server name.
- Once you enable the same QuickConnect ID as the source ones on the destination NAS, the QuickConnect services will be disabled automatically on the source NAS.
