I keep receiving "Improper shutdown" notifications. What do I do?

Details

An improper shutdown1 is often caused by the following reasons:

  • Power outage
  • Improper connection of the power cords
  • Malfunction of the power supplies of your Synology NAS
  • Abnormality of the memory modules
  • Using non-original memory modules

This article details troubleshooting steps to find the cause of the improper shutdown notifications.

Resolution

When you receive "Improper shutdown" notifications, check if the possibility of external power problems. These problems can be ruled out by doing the following:

  • Make sure the power plugs are properly connected to the power outlet.
  • When the power supply of the Synology NAS is connected to a multi-outlet, please check if other devices using the same multi-outlet have encountered any power abnormalities.
  • Check if the Synology NAS was forced shutdown by long pressing the power button.

If the issue did not result from external power problems, please follow the steps below to figure out the cause:

  1. Go to DSM > Control Panel > Hardware & Power > General, and make sure the "Restart automatically when power supply issue is fixed" checkbox is unticked.
  2. If the Synology NAS does not start up again after an improper shutdown, it is probably due to the power supply malfunction.2
  3. If the Synology NAS still starts up again after an improper shutdown, please run a memory test three times. If the issue results from a power supply malfunction or memory module abnormalities, you can request a warranty service.

Notes:

  1. Since improper shutdowns may result in file system errors and even DSM operation failure, we highly recommend making backups for your data to other servers or cloud storage services as soon as possible. Please refer to the Help article of Hyper Backup to learn how to back up your data and packages settings.
  2. We recommend using an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect your system from data loss or file system errors caused by power problems.
