My drive allocation status is shown as "Not Initialized." What does this mean?

Environment

DSM 6.2 to 7.1.1

Details

If your drive has a Not Initialized allocation status1, it may indicate that:

  • The drive contains no system partition. DSM is not installed on the drive.2
  • The drive is not in use and has not been assigned to a storage pool.
  • The system partition, DSM, and the storage pool on this drive have been removed because of a drive/hardware failure or human error.

Check the scenarios below and follow the instruction that matches your situation:

  • The drive is brand new and has just been installed in Synology NAS.
If the drive is brand new, you can proceed to use the drive directly. For example, add the drive to a storage pool or set it as a hot spare drive.
  • The drive belongs to a storage pool from another Synology NAS.3
If you want to access the data on that drive, insert all of the drives associated with that storage pool into your current Synology NAS and restart the system. You may also need to take additional steps (such as repairing the storage pool) to return the storage pool to a healthy and accessible status.

Notes:

  1. Drive allocation status shows whether the drive has DSM installed or how the drive has been assigned. If you are unsure of the status shown, point the cursor over the icon for more information.
  2. To learn more about system partition, refer to this article.
  3. Applicable only to DSM 6.2 and earlier.
