Maintenance made easy
Auto Replacement
Prevent storage pool degradation by letting Synology DSM automatically clone failing drives to available hot spares.
Fast Repair
Minimize the time needed to bring RAID arrays back to a healthy state by only repairing sectors that are currently in use.
Maximize storage efficiency
Get the most out of your storage with powerful optimization features.
Data compression
Reduce average storage consumption in shared folders by up to 30%.
Instant SMB/AFP server-side copy
Reference existing data blocks instead of copying them if the source and destination are both on the same Btrfs volume.
Flash volume deduplication
Maximize storage efficiency by eliminating identical data blocks with volume-wide deduplication on all-flash arrays.
Accelerate data access
Rapid write-back
Faster data write-back speeds up synchronization from SSD cache to HDD and automatically protects cached data.
Btrfs metadata caching
Store all Btrfs metadata to your SSD cache to speed up response and accessing times for all files.
Store securely, stay compliant
Immutable storage
WriteOnce technology prevents modification or deletion of sensitive data. This makes it ideal for archiving and maintaining regulatory compliance.
Protected snapshots
Immutable snapshots can be stored locally or replicated to an off-site Synology NAS, assuring they remain safe from modification and secure against physical disaster.
Securing data against theft and loss
Volume encryption and shared folder encryption are both effective methods of maintaining data security with several important differences between them.

Keeping sensitive data out of reach
Encrypt data on specific shared folders or apply volume-wide encryption to all files and LUNs to prevent data leaks resulting from the physical theft of hardware.
Secure key management
Encryption Key Vault supports local and KMIP key storage, enabling auto-decryption of encrypted folders or volumes on startup. Admins can adopt different options to balance convenience and threat mitigation.
Expand whenever
On-demand expansion
Add new drives with just a few clicks and without interrupting your services as your storage requirements grow.
Flexible deployment
Combine drives of different capacities to create arrays that take full advantage of each drive's available storage with Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR).
High-capacity storage
Optimize your storage for data archives or video management systems (VMS) by creating single volumes that reach up to a Petabyte.
The best combination
HDD
3.5" SATA HDD
3.5" SAS HDD
SSD
2.5” SATA SSD
M.2 NVMe SSD
Notes:
Flash volume deduplication is available on flash-only volumes comprised of compatible Synology SSDs. Synology measured a data reduction ratio of 5:1 using a consolidated virtual server environment.
Synology Hybrid RAID is not supported across all Synology NAS models and cannot be deployed on expansion units. Please check this page for more details.
Peta volumes will be available later in 2021 on select models.
