Peachy Event chose Synology as their go-to for a reliable surveillance solution

One of Peachy Events' longest standing clients is the Lincolnshire Secure Unit, a prison facility requiring 24/7 closed circuit surveillance. The six-year-old system is now calling for an upgrade to increase monitoring efficiency, footage resolution, and overall system robustness. The new solution must come with UPS support for power outage and multiple redundancy options are highly desired.

Their existing system includes two Synology RS3614xs units recording from over 160 cameras. These have been provided to the facility to replace a pre-2000 analogue solution and have been performing immaculately since. However, the sites were still using 720p mpeg cameras which are insufficient by current standard. In response to increased complexity in the data streams and devices network, the facility has flagged three major boxes to tick in this upgrade:

1.      Simplify data streams and live feeds.

2.      Increase service uptime with backup recording servers.

3.      Allow central management of the surveillance system, cameras and monitoring devices.

Having had no problem with the two Synology RS3614xs for over 6 years, the client had no reservation for Peachy Events to deploy another group of Synology solutions in this upgrade.

The prison facility's brand new system takes in 167 cameras into six RS3617RPxs units acting as the recording servers, all of which are configured to fail over to a pool of two RS3614xs acting as backup recorders in the event of outage, with a new pair of RS3621xs+ in a High Availability Cluster playing the brain of the system — the Surveillance CMS (Central Management System) Server that also does the following jobs in the network: DHCP Server, Docker, Maria DB, php MyAdmin, Webstation, and Hyper backup to Synology C2 Storage.

The server room is Fibre based and isolated from the camera network, allowing the CMS to provide a throughput at near 2 Gbps from Surveillance Station, with APC UPS support for power redundancy. Manual failover is regularly performed as disaster rehearsals. Peachy further uses Synology C2 for offsite backup of the configuration of the Surveillance CMS.
