Release Notes for Advanced Media Extensions

Important Note

1. Starting from this version, the processing of media files using HEVC (H.265), AVC (H.264) and VC-1 codecs will be transitioned from the server to end devices to reduce unnecessary resource usage on the system and enhance system efficiency. These codecs are widespread on end devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs. If the end device does not support the required codecs, the use of media files will be limited. For other methods of displaying files requiring codec, please refer to this FAQ.

* Surveillance Station on DSM will continue to support server-side processing of AVC streams via Surveillance Video Extension.

Compatibility & Installation

1. Advanced Media Extensions 4.0 is only compatible with DSM 7.2.2 and above.

Important Note

1. AAC-encoded content can be decoded and natively played back by most end devices, such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs. Server-side transcoding of AAC-encoded content has been a redundant and resource-consuming process that was removed in DSM 6 starting from this version.

1. Advanced Media Extensions 1.0.2 is only compatible with DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 7.

1. Advanced Media Extensions 1.1.2 is only compatible with DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 6.

Important Note

1. Starting from Advanced Media Extensions (AME) 2.0, you must sign in to your Synology Account for authorization to download HEVC and AAC Codecs.
