As WSDOT works to build resiliency into its region-wide shared video system, Synology’s technology allowed us to centralize our management and deployment effectively.

Chad Brown – Senior Systems Administrator

Finding a resilient, configurable VMS

The Northwest region of WSDOT, including King and Snohomish counties, needed a video management system that was compatible with custom web APIs. This would allow them to live stream footage to their in-house software, where WSDOT staff can monitor the feed for roadway incidents. Additionally, they were looking for a more resilient system that could be managed centrally and offer failover capabilities in case of hardware failure.

Custom Web API integration

WSDOT selected Synology after determining that Synology’s VMS offers the central management capabilities they required and can also integrate with their own monitoring software via web APIs. In the Transportation Management Center, WSDOT set up two SA3410 rackmount servers in high availability that run Centralized Management System (CMS) and two RS2423RP+ servers that send footage to their in-house software. Additionally, WSDOT has deployed sets of RS2423RP+ servers in tunnels across the region. Once complete, this project will support up to 2,000 cameras.

Streamlined deployment and remote management

Using Synology enabled WSDOT to fully integrate new technologies, helping them to monitor roadway incidents. Synology’s VMS and custom web APIs allow WSDOT to integrate live feeds from a variety of locations into their in-house software. CMS allows all cameras and servers across the region to be managed centrally, which reduces the workload on WSDOT’s technology services staff. Additionally, Synology High Availability provides an added layer of redundancy to WSDOT’s system overall, ensuring it can maintain visibility in the event of a hardware failure.
