Licensing Plan ActiveProtect Manager allows you to group multiple backup servers into a cluster (called a site) and designate one ActiveProtect appliance as the management server. This management server centrally oversees all backup servers and their protected workloads. By default, each site supports up to three backup servers (including the management server) without requiring additional licenses. To add more than three backup servers to a single site, you will need to purchase an ActiveProtect License Pack.
  • Each license pack includes a single license key. A license key can only be activated in one Synology Account and assigned to a single site at a time.
  • ActiveProtect licenses are term-based and must be renewed upon expiration.
  • Once activated, your ActiveProtect license cannot be returned.
  • Please refer to the appliance specifications to determine the maximum number of backup servers each ActiveProtect appliance can manage.
Refer to the table below to determine when ActiveProtect license packs are required:

License Enforcement ActiveProtect appliances include an enforcement mode that prohibits users from creating new backups and backup copies for the entire site once your licenses have expired. Please renew your licenses to ensure that your data is thoroughly protected. You can activate your license pack immediately or after an active license expires. ActiveProtect Manager requires internet access for license information. If users have not had internet connectivity in the past 14 days, they will be prohibited from creating new backups and backup copies for their entire ActiveProtect site. Frequently Asked Questions Where can I purchase ActiveProtect license packs?
Users can purchase ActiveProtect license packs by contacting our authorized resellers.
Where can I manage ActiveProtect licenses?
All ActiveProtect licenses can be viewed and managed via your Synology Account. Visit your Synology Account, click on Licenses, then click on the ActiveProtect Manager tab to manage all existing license keys or activate new ones.
How many default ActiveProtect licenses do I have if I plan to manage multiple backup servers in a site?
ActiveProtect appliances come with default licenses that include management of up to 3 servers, including your ActiveProtect management server. As our license mechanism is based on backup clusters, individual appliances cannot be combined to add extra nodes beyond the three-node cluster limit. If you want to add additional servers to the cluster, you must purchase additional ActiveProtect license packs.
What happens to my licenses if the management server fails?
If the management server fails, you can manually trigger a failover to a pre-configured failover server. Once the server successfully failovers, your licenses will automatically be transferred over to the new management server. You won’t be required to perform any manual operations. If your management server has failed and you don’t have a pre-configured failover server, send it to Synology to receive a replacement, as long as your server is under warranty. If the hard drives are in good condition, keep them and then install them on your replacement server once it arrives. Your licenses will automatically transfer over to your replacement server.
Can I migrate my ActiveProtect license to another site or Synology Account?
Licenses can be migrated an unlimited number of times to another site, provided that it is under the same Synology Account. However, licenses cannot be migrated to another Synology account. Click here to learn more.
Will I be notified if my license is about to expire?
