Reduce storage usage from multiple backup versions with:
- File-level deduplication and incremental backup for folders and packages
- Block-level deduplication and incremental backup for the entire system
Retains up to 65,535 versions of backup data with a customized version rotation policy to delete previous and unnecessary versions automatically:
- Rotates versions from the earliest versions when total versions exceed the defined number
- Smart Recycle: Keeps the earliest version created each hour, each day, and each week
- Customized retention policy: Up to seven rules of customized retention duration and version interval according to different needs

Limitations

Available storage space on the backup destination must be equal to or greater than 8 GB
Backup destination folders for relinking are not supported to be renamed
External devices such as USB flash drive are not supported to be backed up
Only one task of a backup source can be run at the same time, while other tasks of the same source will queue up and perform sequentially
Backing up data and version deletion of one backup task cannot be performed concurrently
Backup files of multiple versions backup tasks are stored as the backup format (.hbk) which is powered by Synology and can only be read with Hyper Backup, Hyper Backup Explorer, and Hyper Backup Vault
Names of tasks may include 1 to 32 Unicode characters, but cannot contain the following characters:
! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , / : ; < = > ? @ [ ] \ ^ ` { } | ~
Each backup task can only include one LUN as the backup source
LUNs can only be backed up to external disks with ext4 format
Version rotation is not supported in DSM 5.1 or earlier version
Applications backed up in DSM 5.1 or above cannot be restored in DSM 5.0 or earlier version
Encrypted volumes and shared folders can only be backed up when they are unlocked
Entire system backup is supported on specific models only. To check if your model supports this feature, refer to the Product Specifications in Download Center > your model > Documents tab

To restore an entire system, the restoration destination and the source NAS (the original system being backed up) must meet the following requirements:
- The model of the restoration destination should be the same as the source NAS or a newer model (e.g., restore the backup of DS218+ to another DS218+ or DS220+)
- The number of drives and available storage space on the restoration destination must be equal to or greater than that of the source NAS
- The drive setup, including drive type and inserted slot positions, should match the configuration of the source NAS. For example, if the source NAS uses all SSDs, the restoration destination should also use all SSDs; if the source NAS has a mix of SSDs and HDDs, the destination must have the same combination and order

Limitations

Restoring a Hybrid Share folder to a previous version will:
- Unpin all files and folders that were previously pinned in DSM > File Station
- Lose all previous versions if the folder meets both of the following conditions:
  - It is enabled as a Team folder in Synology Drive Admin Console > Team Folder
  - Versioning function is enabled in Synology Drive Admin Console > Team Folder > Versioning
When accessing data with C2 Storage Explorer on a Linux computer:
- Symbolic links are not displayed
- Symbolic link information is not downloaded when downloading a folder
The following data from an entire system backup are not displayed in the C2 Storage Explorer:
- Encrypted shared folders
- Hybrid Share folders
- LUNs
- Shared folders within encrypted volumes
